The Illinois Government Finance Officers Association is registered with the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA) as a sponsor of continuing professional education on the National Registry of CPE Sponsors. State boards of accountancy have final authority on the acceptance of individual courses for CPE credit. Complaints regarding registered sponsors may be submitted to the National Registry of CPE Sponsors through its website: www.learningmarket.org.

Illinois Government Finance Training Paths

Level I

2 day Academy offered each spring delivers a series of survey courses about all facets of government finance in Illinois

Those that complete the entire Level I Academy receive an Illinois Government Finance Professional Level I Certificate

  • New finance department personnel seeking an overview of government finance
  • Professionals with limited experience in government finance
  • Non-finance professionals such as department heads and assistant department heads whose primary duties are unrelated to finance
  • Elected officials unfamiliar with government finance

Level II

Level II classes offered as part of 2 day Academy in the Spring and a 1 day Academy each autumn include a rotating series of basic courses.

Those that complete the Level II Academy courses receive an Illinois Government Finance Professional Level II Certificate

  • Finance department personnel looking to build on knowledge gained in Level I courses
  • Accountants, assistant managers, assistant finance directors, and new finance directors
  • Staff of other government departments involved in budgeting, accounting and managing finances
Completion of Level I or commensurate experience; refer to details under each course announcement
Application and Best Practices Courses 1- 2 day seminars or courses offered as a series of webinars covering intermediate and advanced level material.  Offered as stand alone or as part of Annual Conference
  • Geared to participants with at least three years experience in specific course area or equivalent education in government finance
  • Government finance professionals encouraged to take a refresher course at least every three years to stay up-to-date on changing standards and best practices
Completion of Level II or commensurate experience; refer to details under each course announcement
Institutes

1 day seminars on hot topics and emerging issues

  • Advanced level seminars geared to finance directors and professional staff with at least 3-5 years of experience in subject area
Completion of Level II or commensurate experience; refer to details under each course announcement
Conference Held each September the Sunday through Tuesday following Labor Day.  Includes hot topic sessions, keynote presentation and specific classes and workshops
  • All government finance professionals as a variety of sessions and workshops are offered each year
  • Finance department personnel looking to build on knowledge gained in Level I courses
  • Accountants, assistant managers, assistant finance directors, and new finance directors
  • Staff of other government departments involved in budgeting, accounting and managing finances
