Matteson, IL (pop. 19,073). The Village of Matteson is seeking a knowledgeable Assistant Director of Finance to join their team in this newly created role. Under the general direction of the Director of Finance, this position assists in planning, organizing, and directing the various functions of the Finance Department. As the Assistant Director of Finance, you will play a key role in development of the Village’s annual budget, leading the annual financial statement audit process, and directly oversee the functions of payroll, accounting, bank reconciliations, and accounts payable. The Assistant Director of Finance also provides oversight of the cashiering and water billing processes.

This position will provide active leadership and oversight for the Senior Accountant, Finance Manager, and Water Billing Supervisor. Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare monthly financial reports, perform detailed account analysis, and create complex financial models.
  • Assume primary responsibility for the timely completion of the Village’s annual audit process and the application for the associated GFOA award programs. Prepare annual audit journal entries.
  • Participate as an integral member of the Village budget team and assist the Director of Finance and other Department Heads with budget information requests and reports. The Village’s annual budget is approximately $50M; the Finance Department’s operating budget is $750K.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of Department goals, objectives, policies, and priorities, and assist with maintaining a strong structure of internal controls.
  • Respond to customer complaints by providing swift and effective resolutions to issues as they arise.
  • Participate in the coaching, training and evaluation of personnel.
  • Analyze, evaluate, and provide recommendations to create efficiencies and procedural improvements.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration, public administration, or a similar field.
  • A minimum of (5) years of experience. Public accounting experience is a plus.
  • Strong knowledge of municipal finance practices, including GASB principles and accounting practices.
  • Experience with BS&A Software or similar ERP system is a plus.
  • Extensive knowledge of Microsoft Excel is required.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret financial data, identify trends, and provide strategic recommendations to support informed decision-making.
  • Exceptional communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Valid Illinois driver’s license, or the ability to obtain one.

The anticipated starting salary for the position is $95,000 - $105,000, with an overall salary range of $85,000 - $119,000 +/-, depending on qualifications (DOQ).
